future dreams will be unlocked every monday, wednesday, and saturday

“Twelve.”

“Oh, you’re the same age as my sister! I’m eight. I started school this year.” She clapped her small, soft hands together as she spoke. She was like a small, vulnerable creature, unlike anyone he’d encountered before. Perhaps that’s why, contrary to his usual behavior, a short reply escaped his lips.

“I see.”

“We might not see each other often since we’re in different grades, but let’s be friends! I’m your first friend, Eden!”

“Alright.”

The squirrel-like girl even offered him her hand for a handshake. Perhaps due to her young age, she hadn’t fully mastered the etiquette of a noble lady, considering how casually she treated him, a boy. Just as he’d heard, she was entirely different from her sister. Her sister was said to be like a beautiful but cold northern flower. Even though they were the same age, he’d never met her. Nor did he care to. Evan chuckled softly and took her outstretched hand. It felt as soft as the inside of freshly baked bread.

The Grand Ducal training grounds. A sparring match between the Grand Duke and Evan was in full swing. Evan wielded his sword with an unusual ferocity, as if driven by some unseen force. The Grand Duke’s eyes sharpened, and he swiftly exploited an opening. Evan tried to block, but it was too late.

Clang! Thud!

Evan’s sword flew through the air. He felt the cold touch of a blade against his neck. Edward, the current head of the Grey family and his father, held him at swordpoint.

“Evan, your movements are unusually frantic today.”

“I apologize.”

“Is it because of her?”

The Grand Duke sheathed his sword and helped his son to his feet. He sighed, looking at Evan, who remained silent.

“It couldn’t be helped. Leaving her as she was would have put her in more danger.”

“I know.”

“As soon as the second Beaufort daughter makes her debut, we will send a formal proposal. Then, we can bring her to the Grand Ducal residence and protect her. So don’t worry too much.” His father patted his shoulder reassuringly. Evan shook his head slightly.

“I’m not worried about that. I trust Your Grace will handle it.”

“Then what’s troubling you? Elite knights are constantly by her side to ensure her safety.”

“Ah, it’s nothing.”

“You’re being evasive.” The Grand Duke clicked his tongue, watching his son avoid the question. He glanced towards the garden, where afternoon tea was likely being enjoyed.

“I’ll just cool down and then head inside.”

“Very well.”

Yes, it wasn’t time yet. He’d felt a surge of possessiveness, but he had to restrain himself. For Vivian’s sake.

Upon arriving at the mansion, the Beaufort sisters followed the Grand Duchess to the garden. They walked along a smooth path winding through towering trees. After a short while, they emerged into a wide-open space, refreshing in its expanse. A breathtaking vista of flowers unfolded before them.

“Wow…” Vivian gasped involuntarily. A vibrant yet harmonious tapestry of spring flowers and herbs stretched out before her, arranged in a pattern resembling a small maze. A charming fountain in the center gently bubbled, and elegant marble statues dotted the landscape, adding to its beauty. It was a scene that could easily rival the small gardens of any imperial palace.

“It’s rather modest compared to the main gardens at our family estate, but it has a cozy charm.”

“Excuse me? Modest?”

“Thank you for inviting us to such a wonderful place.” Unlike the astonished Vivian, Flora offered a composed greeting, her lips curved in her usual polite smile. A red archway at the edge of the garden caught Vivian’s eye. Looking closer, she saw it was covered in blooming red roses. They seemed to be in full bloom a bit early for the season. Magic, perhaps? Vivian tilted her head. Caroline, watching her, smiled brightly.

“This way, please.”

The girls passed through the fragrant, enchanting rose-covered path. The Grand Duchess stopped before a table laden with dainty desserts.

“I wasn’t sure what you might like, so I had some of my favorites prepared. I hope they suit your taste.”

“Wow…” Once again, Vivian was speechless with admiration. Today’s theme seemed to be strawberries, as luscious berries adorned everything. Fresh strawberries, of course, but what caught her eye first was the shortcake, layered with fluffy white cream and brimming with strawberries. Beside it sat dainty pink strawberry macarons and madeleines.

Then, a particular dish captured Vivian’s attention: small cups made of dark chocolate. Inside, nestled on a bed of fluffy chocolate buttercream, a single strawberry seemed to smile up at her. Fresh strawberries and chocolate – a combination guaranteed to be delicious. The warm, buttery aroma of freshly baked scones also tantalized her senses. Clotted cream and strawberry jam sat alongside them.

As everyone took their seats, warm tea, milk, and fresh strawberry juice were served, followed by savory tuna sandwiches.

“I had the milk warmed for Lady Vivian, as I heard you enjoy it that way. Is that alright?”

“Of course, Your Highness.” Vivian replied respectfully, her voice laced with excitement, her gaze fixed on the desserts. Afternoon tea in this beautiful garden, with a warm spring breeze caressing her cheek… it couldn’t be more perfect. Caroline rested her chin on her hand and watched Vivian. Then, turning to Flora, she said, “You must be very happy.” Flora looked at her questioningly, silent. Reading her expression, Caroline continued, “Being able to spend every day with such a lovely younger sister must make your days incredibly fulfilling.”
