future dreams will be unlocked every monday, wednesday, and saturday

“Thank you for your concern.” She offered a polite, noncommittal reply. Caroline, startled by her brother’s uncharacteristic display of tenderness, placed a small, elegantly wrapped box on the table. “As a token of comfort, I brought you some tea that’s known for its calming properties. It should help you sleep soundly and have pleasant dreams.”

“Thank you, Lady Caroline.”

“I understand a young boy ran out in front of your carriage?” At Caroline’s question, Max’s eyes turned cold. He maintained a relaxed posture, however, and replied smoothly, “Yes. Unfortunately, it seems a commoner boy, unable to bear the abuse he suffered at home, ran away and caused the unfortunate accident.”

“Goodness. Such a terrible thing. What happened to the boy?”

“We had a physician attend to him, and he’s currently recovering in the guest house.”

“You are truly kind, young lord, as befits the next head of the family.”

“Helping those less fortunate is the duty of the nobility.” The conversation seemed to have reached a pleasant, if slightly somber, conclusion. Then, Evan, who had been silent until now, spoke. “Do you intend to return the boy to his home?”

Max’s irritation flared. Why are these two so interested in something that doesn’t concern them? It was an unnecessary intrusion. Even for the Grand Ducal family, such a question bordered on rudeness. Matters within a family were for the head of the house, and its members, to handle. I’ve already explained the situation. Are they dense, or do they simply believe themselves above such considerations? He frowned slightly, his voice dry. “For now, he’s under the care of Beaufort House. If he’s amenable, we’ll offer him employment.”

“Employment?” Flora’s voice held a note of surprise. Vivian’s eyes darted nervously.

“Yes. He was, after all, involved in an accident with our family carriage. Now that we’re aware of his unfortunate circumstances, it’s our duty to assist him.” Max’s words made Vivian’s heart pound. She clenched her jaw, her knuckles white as she gripped the folds of her skirt. It hasn’t even been a few days since I vowed to avoid him. It’s alright, Vivian. He hasn’t been adopted yet. Right now, he’s just an ordinary, if slightly unfortunate, commoner. Sometimes, one must show compassion.

“Lady Vivian?” Caroline’s voice, tinged with concern, broke through Vivian’s thoughts. She quickly composed herself, releasing her grip on her dress. The delicate silk bore the imprint of her fingers. “Yes, Lady Caroline?”

To distract herself, Vivian popped a chocolate into her mouth, focusing on the sweetness. Across from her, Evan watched her intently. Max and Flora, in turn, observed the Grand Duke’s heir’s unwavering gaze. Finally, Caroline spoke again, her voice gentle, “After the tea, perhaps you and Lady Flora could settle on a date for that riding lesson we discussed?”

“Certainly. I’m available whenever it suits you and my sister.”

“Riding?” Max asked, a puzzled expression on his face. It was an innocent question, devoid of any animosity towards Vivian. But to her, it felt like an accusation. He always looked at her and her mother with such a sharp, distrustful gaze. He was younger now than he had been when she died, but the years of ingrained suspicion were hard to shake. Fear pricked at her, but Flora’s hand, gently covering hers, calmed her. Caroline, noticing Vivian’s unease, interjected, “Yes, I suggested it, Little Duke. Lady Vivian mentioned she hasn’t learned to ride yet.”

“Indeed, brother. Now that Vivian has graduated from the Academy, she should broaden her horizons. It would be beneficial for her to prepare for her social debut.” Flora’s reasoning was sound, and Max nodded in agreement. Vivian was, after all, at an age where she’d only received basic etiquette training and academic instruction. Her debut is still some time away, but it would be advantageous for her to gain experience beforehand. It would also be a good opportunity for Flora to strengthen her own position by associating with the Grand Duchess.

“In that case, I’ll arrange for an instructor soon.”

“Thank you.” In truth, Vivian was already proficient in music, dancing, riding, and even falconry. But she couldn’t reveal that now. These were memories from her previous life, and any mention of them could lead to accusations of witchcraft or sorcery.

Max, his thoughts concluded, offered the Grey siblings a polite smile. It was a polished, yet cold expression, reminiscent of his father, the Duke. “As for the riding outing, I’ll extend an invitation to our estate. Summerhill is known for its flat, open grasslands, perfect for a safe and enjoyable ride for the ladies.”

“We look forward to it.” Max, having finished speaking, decided to excuse himself to attend to some business. He’d also been aware of a certain eavesdropper lurking outside the door. Feeling better already, I see.

“I’ll take my leave now. I hope you enjoy the rest of your visit to Beaufort House.” The Grey siblings smiled and nodded politely. Max turned gracefully and walked towards the door. For some reason, the attendant who should have been stationed there was absent. Click. He opened the door himself. The hallway beyond was eerily silent, devoid of any servants. His gaze swept down the long, dimly lit corridor. Then, instead of heading towards his study, he turned and walked in the opposite direction.
