villainess chapter 31
by duckMeanwhile, inside the room, a seemingly pleasant conversation flowed. Flora, with a cool smile, addressed Evan. “While propriety dictated we send you an invitation, someone with any sense would have declined.”
“You seem quite astute, Your Highness, just as the rumors suggest.”
“Perhaps. I must credit the rather capable retainers of our Grand Duchy.” He responded with a smooth smile and an affable demeanor.
His sister, who had been listening, added to the conversation, unable to bear witness to her beloved, yet sometimes exasperating, younger brother being verbally attacked in front of his future wife. “The heirs of the Grand Duchy, due to the nature of our family’s role, are primarily responsible for training the Knights.”
“Training the Knights?” Vivian’s eyes widened at this unexpected information.
Evan, his gaze gentle, offered an explanation. “Indeed. As protectors of the Empire, the Greys are often deployed, or volunteer for service, in war zones and areas of conflict. Therefore, while the management of our lands is important, the ability to train and lead an elite force, comparable to the Imperial Knights, takes precedence. Consequently, the heir receives training tailored to this responsibility.”
“Is that why you also learned swordsmanship, Lady Caroline?” Vivian turned to the Grand Duchess.
Caroline, her expression radiating adoration for Vivian, kindly replied, “That’s right, Vivian. Of course, it’s never required of the future Grand Duchess. Training our children and the Knights is quite enough.”
“Which is why I will protect the future Grand Duchess with the Grey family name and all its might.” His expression softened.
Vivian, slightly flustered by his earnest addition, responded, “Oh, well, you needn’t tell me all that. Whoever the future Grand Duchess may be, she must feel very secure.”
“If you’re curious, Vivian, I can tell you right now who my family and I have set our hearts upon.” Evan’s unwavering gaze locked onto Vivian’s.
Vivian was struck again by a sense of déjà vu. Those clear, dark eyes, reflecting her own, felt strangely familiar. They held a look that was not only familiar but somehow…yearned for. And so, she found herself whispering a name, as if drawn to it. Ethan? Why does that name keep coming to mind? Who is he?
At that moment, his gaze fell upon her clasped hands. Outside, the biting frost had retreated, giving way to a blossoming spring. Naturally, attire had become lighter. The gloves that encased Vivian’s hands were of a gossamer thin material, almost translucent. Through the delicate fabric, a faint light emanated, tracing a subtle pattern. Evan’s eyes, upon seeing this, flickered with a mixture of alarm and bewilderment. How can that be…?
Of all those present, only he and Caroline recognized and understood the significance of the faint glow. It was undoubtedly the trace of a memory he had sealed before losing his abilities. A memory of a much younger Vivian, attacked by a mysterious group. A moment when he, compelled to act, used his powers on the fading young girl. A day when, on impulse, he almost lost the one who was meant to be his soulmate. The memory of that harrowing scene brought a fresh wave of fear.
“Your…Your Highness?” Vivian’s hesitant voice broke through his reverie. He looked up to see the young woman’s youthful face gazing at him, her eyes, the color of new spring growth, shining softly.
“Ah, in any case, I meant to say I long to announce and bring home my future bride.”
“I see,” Vivian replied evenly, a hint of melancholy shadowing the young man’s features.
Flora, seated beside Vivian, opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again, her emerald eyes flashing with suspicion and intrigue. It’s true. That boy is definitely after our Vivian. But where did they meet? No matter how much I investigate, nothing comes up.
Caroline, seated opposite the sisters, glanced between Vivian’s hand and Evan, then quickly averted her gaze to her teacup, her own golden eyes trembling slightly.
They continued to converse, discussing the upcoming palace ball, etiquette, and hobbies. Time flew by as they sipped fragrant tea and engaged in light conversation. Glancing out the window, Evan was the first to announce his departure. “It’s already evening. Thank you for such a pleasant afternoon.”
“Oh my, has it been that long? Time simply slips away when I’m with you ladies.” Caroline feigned surprise, her eyes crinkling at the corners.
Vivian returned her smile with equal warmth. Flora, with a slight upturn of her lips, responded on Vivian’s behalf, “We shall see you at the palace ball then.”
“Indeed. We’ll take our leave now.” The Grey siblings departed the mansion, escorted by the Beauport sisters. Their carriage swiftly returned them to the Grand Duke’s estate. Evan assisted Caroline as she alighted. As soon as her feet touched the ground, she turned a sharp look on her brother.
